Construction of Prospera 2022
Frankly, I don’t know, and I am not equipped to judge. So, here I am, explaining its origins and arguments for and against. As I find new sources of information, I will post them here. Understand that I do not agree with any of the links I am placing here. They are for informational resources only, and there is definitely bias in all of them. I am just being honest that I am not equipped with enough knowledge to judge this situation or its future. I don’t think most people are, even though there are a lot of emotionally charged discussions out there.

Below, you will find a basic overview of Prospera and its origins, followed by some social media sources to help you better understand the situation

This is a summation of a press release probably from Prospera itself.
Honduras has initiated the process to withdraw from the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), a World Bank arbitration body. This move comes amid a dispute with Honduras Prospera, an autonomous zone known as a ZEDE (Zone for Employment and Economic Development), which is seeking nearly $10.8 billion in compensation from the Honduran government. The claim for compensation is based on allegations that legal uncertainties and the partial repeal of the law establishing ZEDEs have discouraged investments and affected the zone’s future prospects. Honduras Prospera, which operates in the Caribbean coastal region, was granted a 50-year concession in 2013 to manage certain areas with administrative, fiscal, justice, and security autonomy. President Xiomara Castro has expressed opposition to the ZEDEs and supported efforts to repeal the law that created them, although the repeal has only been partially successful to date. Further actions to eliminate the ZEDEs could occur in 2025. The World Bank confirmed receiving a written statement from Honduras indicating its intention to leave the ICSID, which could happen by late August. Honduras Prospera had turned to the ICSID after the Honduran congress partially approved the repeal bill, claiming that they had tried and failed to negotiate with the government. Despite the ongoing dispute, former financial watchdog head Jose Luis Moncada stated that Honduras must respect the outcome of this arbitration and any others that may arise before the end of August

Discussing the origins and arguments for and against Prospera.

Prospera is a special economic zone (ZEDE) located on the island of Roatán in Honduras, aimed at creating a business-friendly environment with minimal government oversight and legal restrictions. It was granted ZEDE status by the Honduran government in late 2017 and has since been a subject of controversy and debate.

Arguments For Prospera:

  • Economic Development**: Prospera is seen as a catalyst for economic growth and job creation in Honduras. It has attracted over $90 million in investment and has the potential to lift thousands of Hondurans out of poverty by providing financial backing and know-how to local entrepreneurs[4].
  • Innovation Hub**: The zone is designed to be innovation-friendly, attracting companies like Minicircle that are working on cutting-edge gene therapies[5]
  • Infrastructure and Employment**: Prospera has completed developments like the Beta Building and is working on others like Duna Residences, which provide employment and improved infrastructure[6]
  • Investor Support**: The project has received backing from prominent investors such as Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen, indicating confidence in its potential[2][5]
  • Governance Model**: Prospera’s governance is said to be empirical-evidence driven, aiming to replicate tested solutions for effective administration[3].

Arguments Against Prospera:

  • Local Opposition**: There has been significant pushback from local communities, such as the historic Garifuna community in the neighboring village of Crawfish Rock, who have raised concerns about land access and fair pricing[2][3].
  • Legal and Political Challenges**: The Honduran government, under President Xiomara Castro, has moved to repeal the legislation governing ZEDEs, which has put Prospera’s future in limbo[4].
  • Perceived Neocolonialism**: Critics argue that Prospera represents a form of neocolonialism, with foreign investors benefiting at the expense of Honduran sovereignty and local welfare[11].
  • Environmental Concerns**: There are concerns about the environmental impact of the development on Roatán’s ecosystem, which includes a world-famous coral reef[6].
  • Legal Dispute**: Prospera has demanded $11 billion from the Honduran government for outlawing the privately run city, which has raised questions about the legitimacy and implications of such investor-state dispute settlements[7].

In summary, Prospera is seen by proponents as a groundbreaking initiative that could transform Honduras’ economy and governance, while opponents view it as a threat to local communities, the environment, and national sovereignty. The development has faced legal battles and public opposition, and its future remains uncertain as the Honduran government reassesses the ZEDE framework[2][4][7].

Bryan Johnson, a millionaire tech entrepreneur and founder of the wellness program Blueprint, is participating in experimental gene therapy on the Caribbean island of Roatán, off Honduras. The therapy, costing $25,000 per session, is designed to boost the body’s production of follistatin, a protein that increases muscle mass and improves bone density. The therapy is being conducted by Minicircle Inc, a small U.S. startup, which operates out of Roatán due to the island’s lax regulations. Despite criticism from scientists about the unproven and potentially dangerous nature of the therapy, Johnson remains undeterred in his quest for longevity and wellness[1][2][9].
